26.11.07 - DHL to build North Asia Hub in Shanghai with total investment of US$175 million

Move boosts DHL’s Asia Pacific investment to more than US$2.2 billion, reinforces commitment to provide seamless trade for customers

Singapore, 26 November 2007 –
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced its decision to establish the DHL Express North Asia Hub in Shanghai, China. To be located at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the new facility will serve China and the vibrant North Asia region, providing DHL’s customers with greater regional connections as well as intercontinental links to Europe and the U.S. This latest strategic US$175 million investment brings DHL’s total investment in Asia Pacific to a phenomenal over US$2.2 billion in the past few years.

A signing ceremony was held today in Shanghai to mark the investment milestone, officiated by Dan McHugh, CEO of DHL Express – Asia Pacific and Wu Nian Zu, Chairman and President of the Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA), as well as senior executives from DHL and SAA.

Scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2010, the North Asia Hub will play a catalytic role to boost DHL’s growth in Asia Pacific, and strengthens its market leadership in China and the region to meet increasing regional and international trade growth. The establishment of the North Asia Hub reinforces DHL’s multi-hub strategy in Asia Pacific as it complements the Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong, as well as Hubs in Bangkok, Incheon, Singapore and Sydney. Together, the six Hubs will be linked to close to 50 DHL Express Gateways strategically located throughout Asia Pacific, providing customers with the most extensive network infrastructure in the region and beyond.

To be sited at an airside location adjacent to the upcoming Runway 3 in the West Cargo Handling Area of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the new 55,000 sqm North Asia Hub, built on a total land area of 88,000 sqm, will be equipped with state-of-the-art features such as a Quality Control Center that also serves as a nerve center for crisis management. Operating 24/7, the DHL QCCs are a network of regional and country quality control centers that proactively monitor all DHL shipments in the air and on the ground round the clock. The North Asia Hub will also be equipped with a leading-edge automated sorting system to maximize operational capability, enhancing efficiency and speed in cargo processing to provide customers with even better time-to-market capabilities. It will have the capacity to sort conveyable shipments to a peak capacity of up to 20,000 parcels and 20,000 documents per hour.

The establishment of the North Asia Hub will result in transit time improvements across North Asia and, in particular, benefit customers located in the Yangtze River Delta. With the excellent air connections to and from the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, DHL will be able to leverage regional and international flights to provide added flexibility for its customers with guaranteed time-definite morning delivery for more major cities in North Asia. Currently, DHL utilizes more than 500 commercial and dedicated flights per week in China. In Asia Pacific, DHL’s customers are served by over 20 dedicated aircraft serving more than 30 destinations in 16 countries and territories. DHL also utilizes more than 800 commercial flights daily in the region.

This year, DHL entered two strategic partnerships to further boost its global aviation strategy. In June, DHL Express completed a strategic partnership transaction with air cargo carrier Polar Air, in which DHL Express holds a 49 percent stake. Recently, in September, DHL Express and Lufthansa Cargo also established a joint cargo airline. These partnerships, effective from late-2008 and April 2009 respectively, will enable DHL to meet the expected strong increase in demand for cargo space between Asia Pacific and Europe as well as the US, providing customers with assured long-term airlift capacity for their shipments.

“Today’s announcement underlines DHL’s strong commitment and confidence in the Shanghai Government’s vision of establishing the city as a world economic center, as well as the Shanghai Airport Group’s objective of building Pudong International Airport as the international air hub of choice,” said Mr. McHugh. “Our task as a global logistics provider is to network the world. We are confident that this Hub will give us an even greater competitive edge in managing the huge and complex global trade that is being routed to this region, enabling DHL to continuously meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”

Mr. Wu said, “Today, the official announcement makes Shanghai Pudong International Airport the first in the world with two international transferring hubs. This shows that China is playing an increasingly important role in the world economy, and Shanghai has an important, irreplaceable position in the global air network. Meanwhile, it is of important strategic significance to accelerate the implementation of the national strategy of Shanghai air hub, take the lead in establishing the position of Shanghai airport as an international air cargo hub, promote the development of Shanghai especially as a shipping center, enhance the city’s service function of Shanghai, and strengthen the service capacity for the economic development of Yangtze River Delta and even the whole of China.”

Jerry Hsu, President, Greater China Area, DHL Express, noted, “DHL has continuously strengthened its presence in China, with a total investment of US$615 million in recent years. As an indication of our commitment to our customers in China, DHL will soon operate two key facilities - the North Asia Hub in Shanghai and the Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong - serving two of the fastest-developing regions in the Yangtze River and Pearl River Deltas respectively, in one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.”

According to China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the Yangtze River Delta accounts for almost 35% of China's total value of imports and exports. In the Yangtze River Delta - the most active economic zone in China - Zhejiang Province is the region’s engine of growth. In 2006, the total value of Zhejiang’s imports and exports was close to US$140 billion, representing a growth of about 29.6 percent over 2005, and its growth in exports tops all the coastal regions in China. The importance of China was also highlighted in a recent Economist Intelligence Unit briefing paper titled Trading up: A new export landscape for ASEAN and Asia, which examined the movement of goods across borders in Asia and confirmed the dominance of China in Asian trade, as well as an exporter to North America and Europe.

Prior to the completion of the North Asia Hub, DHL’s existing Pudong Gateway, located close to the airport’s Express Handling Center, will continue to meet the company’s business growth in the Yangtze River Delta region. The Pudong Gateway, one of DHL’s four major Gateways in China, is already a major center for imports and exports in the region, and complements DHL’s other Gateways in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

23.11.07 - DHL named Global 3PL of the Year at Supply Chain Asia Logistics Awards

Singapore, 23 November 2007 – DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has won the coveted Global 3PL (third-party logistics) of the Year award at the Supply Chain Asia Logistics Awards 2007, organized by Supply Chain Asia magazine. Readers of Supply Chain Asia magazine and a panel of experts have bestowed this accolade on DHL for its innovation, service excellence and commitment to providing customers with superior express and logistics solutions. DHL received the award at a ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center yesterday evening.

The criteria for the Global 3PL of the Year takes into account customer service, product and service innovation, as well as network and technology. DHL’s quest to provide customized solutions and efficient service made it a perfect candidate for this award.

“We are very honored to be the recipient of this award. Our objective is to provide our customers with best-in-class outsourcing and logistics services. To be voted Global 3PL of the Year speaks volumes of how far we have gone to produce the best results for our customers,” said Paul Graham, Chief Executive Officer, DHL Exel Supply Chain – Asia Pacific.

The annual awards ceremony is organized by Supply Chain Asia magazine, a leading logistics and supply chain publication. Through votes cast by readers, finalists were short-listed in each of the 15 categories. An independent panel of 15 judges then selected the winners.

This latest award further attests to DHL’s leadership position in the industry, having also received a string of awards this year. It won Best Express Operator, Best Lead Logistics Provider, Best 3PL, Best Air Freight Forwarder, Best Project Cargo Forwarder and Best Sea Freight Forwarder - at the prestigious 2007 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards (AFSCAs). It was also named “International Express Operator of the Year 2007” at the World Air Cargo Awards.

16.11.07 - DHL commissioned research reveals new export landscape for ASEAN and Asia

Study is part of DHL’s commitment to enhance trade facilitation

Singapore, 16 November 2007 –
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, revealed today the findings of a study commissioned to Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on regional trade flows. The report entitled Trading up: A New Export Landscape for ASEAN and Asia, examines the movement of goods across borders in Asia, with ASEAN as the starting point. Findings show that despite goals on ASEAN integration, the new export landscape in Asia reveals that ASEAN is at a cross roads between pursuing deeper integration with fellow ASEAN member countries, or falling away to develop individual bilateral trading relationships with China. The share of exports to China from all ASEAN countries in the study except Vietnam has risen sharply while intra-ASEAN trade has shown a declining growth trend.

The release of the study is timed to coincide with the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ASEAN-BIS), which DHL has been a key sponsor for the past 5 years. The study concentrated on the ASEAN bloc’s six largest economies – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – and analyzed the trade of its closest regional competitors, China, Japan and India. Shifting import and export trends from 2000 to 2007 are analyzed, focusing particularly on the role played by high-value exports as compared with lower-value bulk commodity goods. It is follow-up research from “ASEAN Exports: Today, Tomorrow and the High-value Challenge”, which DHL and EIU jointly released at the 4th ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2006.

This report shows that trading volumes have changed over the past seven years, the composition of trade has shifted and, most importantly, trade flows have realigned to respond to changing economic and business conditions. DHL believes that for ASEAN to sustain growth, governments and businesses alike have to understand how trade patterns and flows are evolving, particularly as new centres of manufacturing such as China and India rise in the global trading system.

“Our role as a trade facilitator goes beyond the movement of goods to the pursuit of trade patterns and how they are changing across Asia and globally,” said Dan McHugh, CEO, DHL Express – Asia Pacific. “This report provides ASEAN governments with an understanding of the evolving trade patterns within and outside of ASEAN, as well as equipping businesses with the insights to re-assess their strategies in the new export landscape.”

While the study highlighted that intra-ASEAN trade has declined compared with the stellar rise of China, DHL believes that the region will stand firm and continue to grow. It strongly advocates that governments and businesses play a part to move the trade bloc up the export value chain by investing in infrastructure and focusing more on the high-value imports and exports category such as consumer electronics, information technology and medical devices.

“DHL has a dominant position as an express delivery provider in ASEAN and these data confirm what many of our customers have been saying anecdotally. The redirection of trade flows to China has played to our strength in that market, but we urge the Governments of ASEAN to redouble their efforts to reduce trade barriers in their own countries. Intra-ASEAN trade still has great potential to provide economic opportunity and raise living standards,” Mr. McHugh noted.

15.11.07 - DHL wins prestigious regional award for its Flu Pandemic Preparedness Handbook

Singapore, 15 November 2007 – DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has won the top award for ‘Corporate Publications’ at the ‘Asia Pacific PR Awards’ for its pioneering employee publication, Be Informed - Be Prepared: DHL Employee Flu Pandemic Preparedness Handbook. The Certificate of Excellence was bestowed on DHL - the only winner in the category - at a ceremony in Hong Kong on 14 November 2007.

The ‘Asia Pacific PR Awards’ is one of the foremost events in the Public Relations calendar in the region, rewarding work across all the disciplines that are essential in the PR process. A panel of leading PR and communications specialists and clients are responsible for judging the Awards.

Anita Gupta, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications and Sustainability, DHL Asia Pacific, said, “DHL is extremely honoured to receive this award. The Preparedness Handbook is a ground-breaking initiative to educate DHL employees across Asia Pacific. The safety of our employees and customers is of utmost importance to us; hence this recognition as a corporate leader in raising awareness of a potentially global health threat is very gratifying.”

Unlike seasonal epidemics, an influenza pandemic can spread on a global scale and infect a significant proportion of humanity. The 1918 Spanish flu was the most serious pandemic in recent history, killing around 40 million people. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of the risk of a flu pandemic, and the United Nations also warned that an avian influenza outbreak could happen anytime and has the potential to kill over five million people.

As governments and international organizations race to prepare for any such eventualities, DHL’s corporate publication, Be Informed - Be Prepared: DHL Employee Flu Pandemic Preparedness Handbook, represents its commitment to plan ahead to ensure minimal disruption to its operations in the event a pandemic strikes. The Preparedness Handbook was developed with information from leading sources, including WHO, as well as experts from International SOS and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

With the Preparedness Handbook, DHL employees should “Be Informed” of the modes of transmission of influenza, and “Be Prepared” to implement the preventive measures, as well as share the information with their families. A departure from the standard corporate manual look, the Preparedness Handbook was designed in the shape of a medical capsule, drawing a parallel to a dose of medicine akin to a vaccination or pill to generate greater staff interest. The Preparedness Handbook has exceeded initial circulation targets, and is now in the tens of thousands. The circulation has also been expanded beyond Asia Pacific to other regions, such as North America.

Singapore, 10 October 2007 –
DHL Global Mail, Deutsche Post World Net’s International Mail division, today opened a new Domestic Terminal in Singapore. The facility, located in close proximity to Singapore’s Changi Airport, is the largest of its kind for DHL Global Mail in the Asia Pacific region.

The new terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for printing and fulfillment, and has the capacity to handle over five million pieces of mail per month, a four-fold increase from its previous operating facility. This will help to strengthen DHL Global Mail’s leadership position in Singapore’s Direct Marketing industry. The new terminal also complements DHL Global Mail’s operations at the existing terminal at the Airport Hub, which caters to the South East Asia region.

“This is a significant milestone for us. We are confident that DHL Global Mail is now even better positioned to capitalize on the growth of the Singapore’s domestic mail market in the light of the imminent liberalization,” said Michael Culme-Seymour, CEO, DHL Global Mail Asia Pacific. “The strategic location of Singapore will also enable us to tap the thriving intra-Asia cross border mail business in the region.”

Customers will have access to an expanded portfolio of value-added services, including database management, variable printing, lettershopping and light warehousing. In addition, the customers can also look forward to faster turnaround times for their mail delivery, as well as enjoy cost savings from the introduction of a new generation of technology at the terminal.

The new terminal occupies a total area of nearly 18,000 square feet, or about the size of 6 tennis courts, and is close to three times larger than the existing terminal. It offers a comprehensive suite of product offerings covering Direct Mail, Publication, Parcel, Solution and Business Mail.

Global Mail plans to implement Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology at the new Terminal as part of DHL Global Mail’s world-wide initiative to track transit time between mail terminals. The RFID system will be utilized on selected international mail pieces between mail hubs and between mail hubs and postal operators to regulate and enforce stringent quality control across the mail logistics chain to ensure mail pieces are delivered within the stipulated time frame to the recipients.

The RFID technology has already been installed in the international mail terminals in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

25.09.07 - DHL delivers Special Olympics’ Flame of Hope to China for final leg of the Global Law Enforcement Torch Run

Flame will be split into 14 torch runs across Greater China area into Shanghai, marking another first for Special Olympics

Singapore, 25 September 2007 –
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today successfully delivered the Special Olympics Flame of Hope to Beijing, ahead of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai. The Flame’s arrival in Beijing marks the commencement of the Final Leg of the 2007 Law Enforcement Torch Run, which will cover 14 cities in Greater China.

The Flame of Hope will be divided into 14 torches and embark on concurrent runs across 14 cities in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau from 27-28 September, before reuniting in Shanghai on 29 September where the reunited flame will run through the 19 districts of Shanghai over two days. These Torch Runs will be led by Special Olympics athletes and the Final Leg Team of law enforcement officers, supported by 1,850 DHL employee volunteers from Greater China. The World Games, which opens on 2 October 2007, is the first time the Special Olympics will be held in China, with more than 7,500 participating athletes, including nearly 1,200 from Greater China.

Delivered by a DHL courier, the Flame of Hope will be officially received at Juyong Guan – at the Great Wall – and attended by government dignitaries, representatives from SOI and DHL. Here, the Flame will be divided into 14 Flames and given to 14 city representatives, escorted by law enforcement officers for transportation via DHL to the destination cities of the Final Leg Torch Run including Beijing, Harbin, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Xi’an, Suzhou, Wenzhou, Jiaxing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hong Kong and Macau. As DHL was responsible for the smooth and secure transport of the Flame to each international destination, the success of the Final Leg will likewise rely on DHL’s efficient and reliable multi-modal transportation capabilities and extensive network in Greater China to meet the tight schedules for each city.

While the torch has been making its way to Shanghai in the spirit of the Torch Run, the DHL team has been completing another relay – this one aiming to deliver six metric tonnes of donated items from around the world to Shanghai for Special Olympics’ Healthy Athletes Screenings. DHL has coordinated the proper documentation, coding, pre-alerting and return processes of these shipments, along with their customs processing and temporary warehousing upon arrival in Shanghai. Everything from medical supplies and equipment for these health screenings to sunglasses and specialized sound systems have been shipped from the U.S., Canada and Italy to Shanghai, where this major coordination effort has paid off with a seamlessly smooth arrival.

“DHL is making it possible for us to offer more health services to our athletes than we have done at any previous Games. These health screenings are a very important part of Special Olympics Games and can have a life-changing impact on our athletes,” said Lee Todd, Chief of World Games and Competition Special Olympics.

DHL’s Latin American team is also getting into the spirit of Special Olympics. Upon hearing that Special Olympics Costa Rica was unable to send their entire delegation to Shanghai, DHL Costa Rica stepped in with employee donations to sponsor María-Fernanda Solano to travel to Shanghai and compete in swimming competitions. DHL Costa Rica also raised enough money to sponsor the cycling delegation with new uniforms.

Facilitating a seamless Final Leg torch run in Greater China

DHL’s unparalleled reach – covering 318 cities and 95% of China’s population – is instrumental to the success of the Final Leg Torch Run, which will cover vast tracks of China’s coastal and inland regions. DHL also offers on-site logistics expertise on technical and security regulations, as well as customs advisories to assure smooth and time-precise delivery.

“Coordinating each of the 14 Flames of Hope and getting them to the respective destinations within Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau requires meticulous planning and reliable execution, both of which are DHL’s forte,” said Dan McHugh, CEO - DHL Express-Asia Pacific.

The first foreign express and logistics company to enter the Chinese market in 1980, DHL is committed to strengthening its market leadership position through its First in China strategy which includes capacity expansion beyond coastal hubs to cities further inland. To date, DHL has committed more than US$1 billion in its Greater China operations, including the DHL-Sinotrans Headquarters in Beijing and the Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong.

Underscoring its All the Way spirit, DHL is proud to partner with Special Olympics in delivering a seamless global Torch Run across 5 continents – starting in Athens and continuing through Cairo, London, Washington DC, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney before entering into Greater China – totaling 35,000 kilometers, which requires innovative, reliable and time-sensitive international logistics services, local knowledge of customs regulations, as well as delicate handling of the torch.

24.09.07 - DHL Global Mail implements Radio Frequency Identification technology for quality checks on international mail

Automatic Mail Quality Measurement system is the first of its kind linking multiple facilities across Asia Pacific

Singapore, 24 September 2007 –
DHL Global Mail, Deutsche Post World Net’s International Mail division, today announced that it is the first in the mail industry in Asia Pacific to implement Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) across multiple countries in the region. Based on an Automatic Mail Quality Measurement (AMQM) system, this effort is aimed at improving quality control checks for its mail logistics chain. The AMQM system, which has been installed in the mail terminals in Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore, complements DHL Global Mail’s AMQM system in other regions. It is an enhanced service that provides greater visibility of the mailing process from the point when letters are posted to the last-mile delivery.

RFID tags based on the AMQM system will be utilised on selected international mail pieces between mail hubs, such as for example Frankfurt to Hong Kong, and between mail hubs and postal operators to regulate and enforce stringent quality control on the mail logistics chain to ensure mail pieces are delivered within the stipulated time frame to recipients. The data derived from the system will be used to optimize routing options for customers.

Key benefits for DHL Global Mail’s customers as a result of using RFID for quality checks focus mainly on increased reliability, transparency and improved service quality. As a result, customers will enjoy higher service quality for no additional costs.

“DHL Global Mail has always been delivering high quality mail logistics solutions,” said Jan-Willem Adrian - Director Commercial, Sales & Marketing. “The introduction of the RFID technology into the normally staid mail logistics industry is a testament to our commitment to improve and introduce innovative solutions along the mail value chain for the benefits of our customers.”

The RFID technology uses devices attached to objects that transmit data wirelessly to a RFID receiver. It offers larger data storage capacity; read and write capability; and no line-of-sight requirement for both transponder and receiver – these are attributes that traditional bar-coding could not offer.

In addition to Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, DHL Global Mail is planning to install the new technology in Japan in 2008.

12.09.07 - DHL Asia Pacific Regional Office goes green

‘Green Office’ award underscores DHL’s commitment towards environmental sustainability

Singapore, 12 September 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced that its Singapore-based Asia Pacific Regional Office at Parkview Square has been successfully certified as a ‘Green Office’ by the Singapore Environment Council, making it the first and only international company in the industry to be awarded the label here.

DHL is one of the 10 corporate and government offices in Singapore to have made the cut, passing a rigorous audit covering indicators such as environmental policy and commitment, energy consumption, paper usage, purchasing practices especially those related to IT, focus on recycling, as well as training linked to environmental issues.

Some of the best practices adopted by the regional office include installing water saving devices, converting to energy saving lights, reducing the extent of lighting and elimination of disposables, as well as switching to recycled paper and encouraging double-sided printing. The office has also introduced a Let’s Go Green campaign to educate the employees on environmental-friendly practices, and encourage them to do their part for the environment.

By adopting these effective measures, DHL’s Asia Pacific Regional Office has significantly reduced its electricity and water consumption by 30% and 25% respectively.

Dan McHugh, CEO of DHL Express - Asia Pacific, said, “Earning the ‘Green Office’ label allows us to demonstrate to our customers, partners and employees our commitment towards managing our environmental impact in our offices. Environmental sustainability is a strategic consideration that is critical to DHL’s long-term growth. Globally, DHL is investing its resources and efforts towards alternative technology and innovation for our transport fleet and network operations, as well as offering green solutions for our customers.”

DHL recognizes that its business operations impact the environment, and has therefore been actively pursuing environmental initiatives as part of its corporate social responsibility and service to customers.

In January this year, DHL launched a new carbon neutral shipping service GOGREEN in Europe at the World Economic Forum. DHL GOGREEN is a value-add service which provides carbon-neutral shipping to help its customers offset the carbon dioxide emissions produced through the transportation of their shipments. The emissions are calculated and off-set in carbon reduction projects ranging from alternative vehicle technologies to renewable fuels. To ensure accountability and transparency, the program is annually verified by an external certifying body - Swiss-based Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS). DHL aims to expand this value-add service to other regions and countries including Asia Pacific.

In other environmental sustainability initiatives in Asia Pacific, DHL Express has introduced bio-fuelled or hybrid vehicles in its various markets including Bangladesh, Japan, Thailand and India to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to alternative vehicle technology, DHL is focusing its efforts towards internal communications on environmental responsibility to drive staff behavior change and action focusing on green office programs. Environmentally-friendly practices are also well-entrenched in DHL’s Logistics division. Over 90% of DHL Global Forwarding’s facilities in the region are ISO 14001-certified, while DHL Exel Supply Chain has achieved OHSAS 18001 certifications for most of its facilities.

05.09.07 - DHL increases capacity for Hong Kong-Beijing service to meet growing trade volume

Singapore, 5 September 2007– DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has further enhanced its overnight service between Hong Kong and Beijing, by increasing its dedicated flight frequency to meet the growing demand for cargo capacity fuelled by the robust trade between Hong Kong and Mainland China.

Customers utilizing this ten-time weekly dedicated service will now enjoy more options for their Hong Kong-Beijing shipment delivery schedule with the newly-added weekend flights, representing a 25 percent uplift capacity. As part of the service enhancement, DHL will utilize a larger Boeing B727-200F aircraft operated by Air Hong Kong – a 60/40 joint venture between Cathay Pacific and DHL – and customers will benefit from an overall 58 percent increase in payload capacity as the new freighter has a capacity to hold 24 tons per sector.

Dan McHugh, Acting CEO, DHL Express - Asia Pacific, said, “We foresee sustained cargo volume growth, as Hong Kong and Mainland China become more intricately linked as an integrated supply chain due to deepening economic integration. The decision to add capacity to the route reflects DHL’s commitment to enhance our service offerings so that our customers will continue to enjoy efficient and reliable first-rate express and logistics services.”

Trade between Hong Kong and Mainland China has been registering double-digit growth in recent years, boosted by strong Chinese exports. According to figures from China’s Ministry of Commerce, two-way trade figures in 2006 rose an impressive 21.6 percent, reaching US$166.2 billion. The uptrend continues in the first half of 2007, as trade volume expanded by a further 23.5 percent compared to a year ago. Hong Kong was China’s fourth largest trading partner and third largest export market last year.

Tom Murphy, Senior Vice President, Aviation, DHL Express - Asia Pacific, said, “These additional flights will offer our customers the option of dispatching urgent or time-sensitive shipments over the weekend, allowing them to enjoy greater flexibility and convenience in meeting their business needs.”

The upgraded Hong Kong-Beijing service will further strengthen DHL’s Asia Air Network. The network currently comprises more than 30 destinations in 16 countries and territories, served by over 20 aircraft in dedicated air operations. This allows major Asia Pacific cities and other business centers to be interconnected through DHL’s regional hubs and gateways, providing DHL’s customers with overnight services across the region.

30.08.07 - Leading social entrepreneur in Asia Pacific honored at DHL YES Awards

Winner of inaugural regional DHL Young Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (YES) Awards lauded for work in helping Pakistani women fight poverty

Singapore, 30 August 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced that Ms Aysha Saifuddin of Pakistan is the leading social entrepreneur among five Asia Pacific countries participating in the inaugural DHL Young Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (YES) Awards.

Ms Saifuddin, aged 35, emerged as the overall regional winner following rounds of deliberation by the Awards’ International Council – a panel of renowned public personalities associated with social entrepreneurship, public policy and international relations – for her leading work in championing gender equality and empowerment in Pakistan. Since founding the Kaarvan Crafts Foundation in 2003, Ms Saifuddin has helped to improve the lives of thousands of women entrepreneurs from low-income communities by providing them with market access and retail know-how for their products. In equipping the women with management training, business skills and employment opportunities, Kaarvan Crafts Foundation has successfully empowered these women to make general household decisions more independently, while helping them to supplement their household income by nearly 30 percent. The Foundation aims to double its outreach to 5000 women entrepreneurs by 2010.

She was one of the five outstanding individuals – including Ms Pinky Sikder, Mr. Illac Angelo Diaz, Ms Areena Ng and Ms Kritaya Sreesunpagit – who were earlier named as the national-level winners of the DHL YES Awards representing Bangladesh, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand respectively. These five social entrepreneurs were awarded the accolade for their excellent business initiatives to foster social change in line with one or more of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Aysha Saifuddin received a cash prize of US$10,000, as well as the regional trophy, at an award ceremony in Singapore, which was attended by dignitaries and representatives from NGOs. The other finalists each received US$5,000.

Ms Erna Witoelar, UN Special Ambassador for the MDGs in Asia and the Pacific, said, “The five social entrepreneurs, who are individuals of high-calibre, are shining examples of how an individual’s hard work can help benefit communities through innovative ideas. Everyone has a goal to play in helping societies achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The corporate world, in particular, plays a vital catalytic role in driving and sustaining the momentum to bring about substantial change. Gestures of recognition like the DHL YES Awards will help drive social entrepreneurship in this region.”

DHL firmly believes that social entrepreneurs can play an instrumental role in finding innovative solutions to social problems and removing barriers to growth. While social entrepreneurship is a prevalent concept in Europe and North America, it is still a nascent development in Asia Pacific. Only Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore are among the top-20 ranked countries/regions on the Responsible Competitiveness Index. Through the YES Awards, DHL hopes to promote the fledging movement in the region.

“Through their meaningful work, the five finalists have made significant contributions to their societies. They make excellent role models for anyone who wishes to pursue a social cause, and profiling their work would help boost awareness about social entrepreneurship in Asia Pacific,” said Dan McHugh, Acting CEO, DHL Express – Asia Pacific. “By initiating the YES Awards, DHL hopes to provide an annual platform for young entrepreneurs to share their innovative ideas to improve the people’s lives in their societies. With the success of the inaugural awards, we hope to encourage even more participation from young business leaders next year.”

The DHL YES Awards is part of DHL’s community investment program, which also includes disaster management and supporting future generations. Globally, DHL has a partnership with UNICEF supporting their worldwide fight to reduce child mortality through long-term logistical and financial assistance. DHL is also supporting the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the area of disaster management. DHL is a signatory to the UN Global Compact Principles, and supports the UN Millennium Campaign.

Singapore, 6 July 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced the launch of Airport to Door Express, an offering which combines the ease-of-use and speed advantage of DHL’s industry-leading service with the transportation requirements of importers under traditional shipping terms.

Airport to Door Express is a specially designed, user-friendly service that meets the needs of customers who import from their overseas suppliers usually using Free Carrier (FCA) Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) that do not require door-to-door transport. This new DHL service, which has been traditionally offered by freight forwarders only up till now, will bring added value to this industry segment and will be available in 13 countries covering over 50 key receiving centers in Asia Pacific.

“DHL aims to reach out to businesses that have the need to use traditional freight forwarding services, but who seek to reduce the complexities and inconveniences of international shipping processes,” said Dan McHugh, Acting Chief Executive Officer and Senior Vice President - Commercial, DHL Express Asia Pacific. “Airport to Door Express is specially created for them as it combines DHL’s well known ease-of-use with the efficiencies needed for their requirements to manage international shipments.”

With the Airport to Door Express service, DHL aims to tap into an industry segment that is estimated to account for 50 percent of the total cross-border airfreight market in Asia Pacific.

Customers who pay for their freight costs within a non-integrated transport chain will enjoy the simplicity and control of one point of contact, one fixed price and one invoice for all their import requirements, aligned to their preferred Incoterms. They will also benefit from market-leading transit times of only one to two days for intra-Asia shipments, DHL’s expert customs clearance and 24-hour tracking services.

In addition, customers who use the Airport to Door Express service will not only enjoy a competitive price, access to conveniently located receiving centers and leverage DHL’s unrivalled air and network infrastructure, but will also be able to send packages that are not restricted by weight or size limits.

Airport to Door Express is launched in 13 markets in Asia Pacific covering Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. It is anticipated that the product will be expanded to the rest of Asia Pacific and to other regions at a later stage.

06.07.07 - DHL celebrates 35 years in Singapore with new S$9 million service center investment

Singapore, 6 July 2007– DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced the official opening of its S$9 million eXpo Service Centre @ Changi South to mark the company’s 35 years in Singapore.

Over the past three and a half decades, Singapore has grown to play an increasingly important role for DHL in Asia Pacific. Singapore is in a key economic region, and as one of DHL’s major logistics hubs in Asia Pacific, DHL Express Singapore is expected to increase its cargo handling capacity to more than 10.5 million shipments by the year 2011, with the opening of the new service center.

Spanning a total site area of more than 76,600 sq feet (7,100sqm), the eXpo Service Centre @ Changi South is the largest service center operated by DHL Express Singapore. At present, it handles more than 240,000 shipments per month, two times more than the average handling capacity of DHL Express’ other centers in Singapore.

The new facility was officially opened by Mr. S. Iswaran, Singapore’s Minister of State for Trade and Industry, together with Yasmin Aladad Khan, Senior Vice President, Southeast Asia, DHL Express - Asia Pacific, and Alec Ang, General Manager, DHL Express Singapore. The facility is specially-designed to handle larger-sized cargo, and to facilitate the anticipated surge in shipment volumes in Singapore and the region.

Ms. Khan said, “Singapore registered a significant growth last year in terms of the value of total imports and exports to the rest of the world. The contribution from the logistics sector to Singapore’s economy is expected to take a greater share from the current 8% to 13%, and we cannot emphasize enough how integral Singapore is for DHL’s long-term growth. DHL is committed to invest here to meet the continual growth in Singapore’s logistics industry.”

Mr. Ang added, "The opening of the eXpo Service Centre on DHL Express Singapore’s 35th anniversary is a milestone for us. Having registered good growth figures in 2006, we forecast an even better 35th year. We will continue to work towards the Government's vision of establishing Singapore as a leading logistics hub in Asia Pacific. Our latest investment today is a very important part of DHL’s long-term growth strategy in Singapore and the region. The new eXpo Service Centre @ Changi South will significantly enhance DHL’s capability to provide the highest level of service to our customers and help us consolidate our position as the trade facilitator of choice in the region.”

Conveniently located within the airport vicinity, the eXpo Service Centre will further enhance efficiency and speed in cargo processing, providing customers with better time-to-market capabilities. The service center, together with DHL Express’ four other service centers strategically-located island-wide at Airport Cargo Road, Paya Lebar, Jurong and one located centrally at Tanjong Pagar, seamlessly connect DHL’s customers in Singapore to the region and worldwide, ensuring that they continue to enjoy DHL's best-in-class products and service offerings as a trade facilitator.

Like all DHL Express facilities in Singapore, the eXpo Service Centre has obtained a Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) Class A certification.

Jason Teo, TAPA Asia Chairman, noted, "DHL has the highest number of certified sites in Asia Pacific. Obtaining the TAPA certification bears testament to their continuous commitment to security and is exemplary for other supply chain service providers to emulate. It is an indication that DHL is prepared to take proactive measures to ensure that its customers' shipments are delivered in a safe and secured manner.”

The eXpo Service Centre is also monitored by the Quality Control Center (QCC) that serves as a nerve center for crisis management in Singapore. Operating 24/7, the DHL QCCs are a network of regional and country quality control centers that proactively monitor all DHL shipments in the air and on the ground round-the-clock.

As part of DHL’s commitment to the security of customers’ shipments, the QCC is also equipped with Quality Shipment Monitoring System (QSMS), a global shipment management system that has the unique capability and feature to alert analysts based at QCCs in the countries when certain operational actions do not happen within a fixed set of timings.

This real-time monitoring of individual shipments, door-to-door, allows better issues management and enables DHL to identify potential problems, and recommend rectification strategies before the situation is magnified.

29.06.07 - DHL participates in Torch Lighting and Torch Run Ceremony in Athens

World’s leading Express and Logistics Company to Carry the “Flame of Hope” Through Five Continents for 2007 Special Olympics World Games

Singapore, 29 June 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, will embark on a journey of hope across five continents from June to October. DHL is the Global Partner of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The company will participate today in the symbolic Torch Lighting Ceremony held in Athens, Greece before commencing its task to transport the Flame of Hope across the world to the Opening Ceremony of the Games in Shanghai, China on 2 October 2007.

The lighting ceremony will be graced by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ms. Anna Benaki – Psarouda, along with Ministers from Greece, the Mayor of Athens Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, Dr. Timothy Shriver, Chairman of Special Olympics International, as well as the Vice Mayor of Shanghai and Executive Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Special Olympics World Summer Games Shanghai 2007, Mr. Zhou Taitong. Spectators will witness the lighting of the torch on Athens’ Sacred Site of the Pnyx, facing the Acropolis. The Flame of Hope will be then carried by Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement personnel on a journey through historical and cultural monuments of Athens, including the Zappeion Palace, the Prime Minister’s Headquarters and the Marble Panathinaikon Stadium.

“We are proud to be the official partner of the Special Olympics Global Law Enforcement Torch Run 2007, an event which celebrates personal courage and global diversity. This partnership is our way of paying tribute to the spirit of sportsmanship and tenacity of the special athletes, who have overcome all odds to participate in this global sporting event,” said Frank-Uwe Ungerer, Managing Director of DHL Express Greece. “The event will be of special significance to the staff of DHL Greece, all of whom are extremely excited about the opportunities to play a part in kicking off this meaningful activity.”

Throughout the Athens Torch Run route, DHL volunteers will be stationed at the various stops to support the Special Olympics athletes and the Law Enforcement officers running alongside them. Moreover, 80 runners will run together with these athletes. From the Marble Panathenaikon Stadium, Special Olympics Athletes carrying the Flame of Hope will embark on an antique cars parade, which will be led by a DHL historical car and followed by a fleet of DHL’s vans and motorcycles. This antique cars parade will bring the Flame of Hope to the Chinese Embassy in Athens, marking the final destination of the Athens Torch Run.

After the Torch Run, the torch will transit at the Presidential Residence for one night under the supervision of the Presidential Guards, before being taken to DHL’s gateway facility at Athens’ International Airport. It departs for Egypt with Olympic Airlines and will be accompanied by a DHL security personnel, to Alexandria. It will remain in the city for events at the Alexandria library and the Citadel before being transferred by road to Cairo.

“DHL is committed to providing smooth transport of the flame around the globe by leveraging on our network of hubs and gateways to each ceremony location and in effect, sharing the vision of hope with the Special Olympics athletes,” said Dan McHugh, Acting CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific.

DHL will facilitate the remainder of the Torch Run by tapping on the company’s comprehensive global network and domain expertise in logistics, providing end-to-end logistics support from start to finish. The transportation involves stringent security processes and screening. As with all shipments, the torch will be tracked and traced by DHL’s Quality Control Centers, and will be scanned at each exit and entry point during the Torch Run.

DHL has overcome challenges such as regulations requiring the flame to be transferred from the torch to a Miner’s Lamp. The lamp is filled with 150ml of standard lamp oil, which is in the form of liquid paraffin, approved by Civil Aviation authorities, and needs to be refilled every 24 hours. Special Olympics International will be in charge of this maintenance for the lamp’s transportation from Athens to Cairo. The lamp has been approved for transport on passenger airlines at every Olympic Games.

To mark the significance of the event to the city of Athens, DHL Hellas will also be sponsoring the Greek Sailing Team for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The company will cover the transportation costs of the 6-member Greek Sailing Team to Shanghai.

After the World Summer Games in Shanghai, the 2007 flame will reside at DHL headquarters in tribute to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. In 2009, the “Flame of Hope” will again be lit in Athens and make its voyage by DHL across the globe to the 2009 Special Olympics Winter Games in Idaho.

29.06.07 - DHL completes strategic partnership transaction with Polar Air Cargo

Guaranteed access to airlift capacity for next 20 years enhances DHL’s trans-Pacific competitive advantage

Singapore, 29 June 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced that it has successfully completed the transaction to form a strategic partnership with Polar Air Cargo Worldwide, Inc., a wholly owned unit of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (AAWW), a leading provider of global air cargo services. As part of this transaction, DHL Express will invest US$150 million for a 49% stake and 25% of voting rights in Polar Air Cargo Worldwide.

The transaction includes a commercial arrangement that gives DHL Express guaranteed access to Polar Air Cargo’s aircraft capacity in key global markets over a period of 20 years, with a potential revenue stream to the AAWW companies of US$3.5 billion. In addition, DHL Express will have access to additional available aircraft capacity from Atlas Air, Inc., another subsidiary of AAWW, as agreed between the parties. The long-term access and greater capacity will significantly improve service to DHL Express’ customers who ship goods between Asia Pacific and the US – reducing transit times and increasing reliability of delivery on the trans-Pacific air routes. The investment in Polar signals another major commitment to the US market and represents a major milestone in DHL’s strategy to provide a compelling alternative in the US domestic express delivery market.

“We are pleased with the completion of this partnership with Polar Air Cargo, which is a strategic thrust instrumental in positioning DHL as the global express and logistics provider of choice,” said John Mullen, Global CEO of DHL Express. “It shows that recognizing and responding to the needs of customers are a reiterative process for DHL - we understand the importance of broadening the scope of our service offerings to stay ahead of the curve in view of the increasing demand for cargo routes between Asia Pacific and the US.”

Asia Pacific is going through a period of intense growth, fuelled by several growth drivers including the burgeoning economies of China and India. The trade flow for the trans-Pacific routes has been growing steadily in recent years. According to Boeing’s World Air Cargo Forecast 2006/2007, Asia-US trade is forecasted to expand at an annual average of 7.1 percent, compared to 6.9 percent for Asia-Europe. The overall share of world air trade connected to Asia’s markets, including the domestic markets of China and Japan and the international markets, is expected to increase from 50.8 percent in 2005 to 63.3 percent in 2025.

“The new partnership shortens the global supply chain for our customers and improves trade lanes by connecting the major markets on both sides of the Pacific,” said Dan McHugh, Acting CEO, DHL Express – Asia Pacific. “This significant move reinforces DHL’s role as a trade facilitator, and positions us ideally for even greater growth in Asia Pacific and the US.”

DHL has been an active champion of growth for Asia Pacific, its fastest-growing region in the world. It has been investing heavily on capacity expansion in Asia Pacific to anticipate the growth since early 2000. This partnership also serves as a testament to DHL’s pursuit of providing best-in-class product and service offerings to secure customers’ loyalty in the region. It will not only ensure capacity for future growth, but will also provide its customers with quicker time-to-market capabilities between the regions.

“We are pleased to close on this significant transaction,” said William J. Flynn, President and CEO of AAWW. “We welcome DHL Express as an anchor customer for Polar, and the opportunity to be a sizeable supplier of air cargo capacity to a dominant player in the express business. At the same time, we look forward to building on this relationship to meet the demands for future growth on some of the world’s most important trade routes.”

Polar Air Cargo will continue to operate as an independent company and there will be no integration with DHL or any of its business units.

Besides the football teams, nine cheerleading teams also held their own competition, providing spectators with a visual feast of choreography and precision. The cheerleading team from host country Malaysia got the highest votes from the judges, amidst enthusiastic support from friends and colleagues from the sidelines.

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced a global partnership with Special Olympics International, by providing logistics support for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, and the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, USA. The partnership between DHL and Special Olympics marks the first time that the “Flame of Hope,” which is traditionally carried by law enforcement personnel and Special Olympics athletes, will be transported globally prior to reaching the Opening Ceremony of the 2007 World Summer Games on 2 October 2007.

The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai will host 7,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities from more than 160 countries and regions. The Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle, with the objective of showcasing the unification of society and the inclusive nature of Special Olympics.

For more than 25 years, the “Flame of Hope,” which symbolizes the courage and celebrates the diversity represented by the Special Olympics movement, has been traditionally lit in Athens, Greece, and then carried to the site of the Special Olympics World Games. During the 2007 Law Enforcement Torch Run®, the “Flame of Hope” will be lit on 29 June in the ancient Olympic tradition on the Sacred Site of Pnyx (facing the Acropolis of Athens), marking the beginning of the Torch Run. The journey of the flame will begin by a Torch Run of Special Olympics Athletes and law enforcement officers to the Chinese Embassy in Athens. The flame will then travel from Athens around the world for three months before arriving in China for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, where it will be used to ignite the giant Special Olympics Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony. DHL will leverage its network of hubs and gateways to move the “Flame of Hope” across these cities using a combination of cargo planes and DHL vehicles or boats to ceremony locations in each host city. The three-month global Torch Run is a joint effort of Special Olympics International, the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games Steering Committee and DHL. In the tradition of Special Olympics, the ceremony will be graced by heads of state, international sports figures and celebrities.

After the World Summer Games in Shanghai, the 2007 flame will reside at DHL headquarters in tribute to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. DHL employee volunteers, together with their families and customers, will join the athletes and law enforcement officers in the cities where the Torch Runs are held.

DHL is an active participant in the global sporting scene and has, over the last 12 months, sponsored several world-renowned sporting events, including NBA, FIFA World Cup 2006, American “Major League Baseball”, Formula One and the New Zealand Lions Tour.

Moving the “Flame of Hope” for Special Olympics and providing logistics support to Special Olympics is another of DHL’s contributions to sports.

07.06.07 - DHL expands Gateway at Kansai International Airport to meet region’s flourishing logistics demand

Tokyo, 7 June 2007–
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today inaugurated its new five billion yen (US$41 million) expanded facility at the Kansai International Airport. The 10,100 sqm DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway, located at the International Cargo Warehouse C, is the largest facility operated by an international express company at the airport.

The event was officiated by Scott Price, CEO, DHL Express – Asia Pacific, and Atsushi Murayama, President of Kansai International Airport Co. Ltd, as well as senior executives from both companies. This latest investment is part of DHL’s commitment to invest almost 11 billion yen (US$90 million) in Japan in the next few years, announced at DHL Japan’s 35th anniversary celebrations in February this year.

The DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway began operations at the airport’s International Cargo Area in July 2003. It plays a critical role in serving DHL’s customers throughout the Kansai region in West Japan. The expansion of the Gateway enables DHL to meet continued strong business growth in Japan, especially in Kansai - a major import center for exports from China – and reflects the important role of Kansai as a conduit of international trade.

“The expansion of the DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway underlines the strong growth that DHL is experiencing in Japan and Asia Pacific. The expanded Gateway complements our other Japan Gateways in Chubu and Narita,” Mr. Price noted. “Together, the three Gateways seamlessly connect our customers in Japan to our extensive network in Asia Pacific and beyond, ensuring they continue to enjoy DHL’s best-in-class product and service offerings.”

The expanded facility – five times bigger than the previous facility - will accommodate the increases in cargo volume and weight handled by DHL in Kansai. Equipped with state-of-the-art features such as customs clearance and bonded warehouse facilities, the DHL Kansai International Airport Gateway will provide a significant boost to international trade, as well as the air express and logistics industry in Kansai. Now relocated next to the airport runway, the new facility will also further enhance efficiency and speed in cargo processing, providing customers with better time-to-market capabilities. Air Hong Kong, DHL’s joint venture with Cathay Pacific, currently operates a ten-time weekly dedicated service to the Kansai International Airport to and from DHL’s Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong. In Japan, DHL also utilizes close to 100 commercial flights daily.

Guenter Zorn, Representative Director/President, DHL Japan, said, “The Kansai region, Japan’s second largest economic zone, is home to many local and international companies in the apparel, electronics and heavy machinery industries. With the high level of demand for global express and logistics services among the various industries, the expanded Gateway will enable DHL to provide even more flexible, speedy services to our customers. As a trade facilitator, DHL is delighted to contribute to Kansai’s ever-increasing trade flows, moving imports and exports efficiently to and fro the region.”

Mr. Murayama said the expansion of the DHL facility will further stimulate air cargo growth, especially among customers requiring the speedy and reliable services provided by the company.

“We welcome the opening of DHL’s newly-expanded facility. Come August 2007, Kansai International Airport will be Japan’s only airport providing 24/7 operations. We firmly believe that the opening of the expanded facility by DHL, which has the world’s most extensive international network, is significant in that it enhances Kansai airport’s capabilities as an international air logistics hub, opening up new business opportunities for our customers,” he said.

A key feature of the expanded facility is its automated sorting system, with features such as parcel flow control and camera scanning technology, which reduces sorting time and improves sorting quality. A first for DHL in Asia Pacific, it is also the first company to install an automated sorting system at the Kansai International Airport. The automated system sorts approximately 7,500 parcels - almost three times more than previously - and 2,000 documents per hour.

A Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) Class A-certified facility, the expansion will see the Gateway further enhance its advanced security system with more than 40 CCTV cameras, and a Quality Control Center (QCC) that serves as a nerve center for crisis management. Operating 24/7, the DHL QCCs are a network of regional and country quality control centers that proactively monitor all DHL shipments in the air and on the ground round the clock.

As part of DHL’s commitment to the security of customers’ shipments, the QCC is equipped with Quality Shipment Monitoring System (QSMS), a global shipment management system. The QSMS has the unique capability and feature to alert analysts based at QCCs in the countries when certain operational actions do not happen within a fixed set of timings. This real-time monitoring of individual shipments door-to-door allows better issue management as it enables DHL to identify potential problems, and recommend rectification strategies before the situation is magnified.

DHL is committed to Japan, and has been continuously reinforcing its network infrastructure to enhance its leadership position in the Japanese market. Besides the almost 11 billion yen (US$90 million) committed to Japan over the next few years, DHL had invested 20 billion yen (US$165 million) in Japan between 1999 and 2006, reinforcing both its ground and air networks. DHL is present in 130 locations in Japan, including more than 60 Express Centers and Service Centers - the largest network in the air express industry.

25.05.07 - Additional US$40 million investment enhances DHL’s footprint in Yangtze River Delta and Shandong Province

New flight and gateway to tap on growing regional economies and strengthen DHL’s market-leading position

Hangzhou, 25 May 2007 –
DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced a new dedicated flight connecting Qingdao and Hangzhou with DHL’s Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong. The move will increase the economic connectivity of the three cities and accelerate the inbound and outbound express business in Zhejiang and Shandong provinces. DHL has already started gateway operations at the Hangzhou International Airport. These latest investments by DHL totaled about US$40 million, and are part of the planned US$110 million investment in its China business in the next few years, which DHL announced in February this year.

The new ten-time weekly flight allows DHL to better meet the increasing demand for international express and logistics services and capabilities due to the rapid economic development in these regions. The new flight, operated by a Yangtze River Express Airlines 737-300 freighter aircraft with a payload capacity of 13 tons, marks Hangzhou Airport’s first international air express cargo connection. The flight, together with DHL’s new 2,000 sqm Hangzhou Gateway, will boost the economic development in booming cities like Hangzhou, Ningbo and Qingdao, and further strengthen DHL’s market leadership in China.

“The latest investments are reflective of DHL’s aim to continuously boost our service offerings to meet China’s strong economic growth and our customers’ requirements”, said Jerry Hsu, President – Greater China Area, DHL Express. “The new dedicated Qingdao-Hangzhou-Hong Kong flight and the Hangzhou Gateway will greatly drive the economic development of the regions, and enhance our combined capability in these major logistics markets – and at the same time provide our customers with greater international connectivity.”

In the Yangtze River Delta - the most active economic zone in China - Zhejiang Province is the region’s engine of growth. In 2006, the total value of Zhejiang’s imports and exports was close to US$140 billion, representing a growth of about 29.6 percent over 2005, and its growth in export tops all the coastal regions in China.

Qingdao is the leading city in Shandong Province, which is a major force behind the economic development in the Bohai Sea region. In 2006, Qingdao ranked as one of the top 10 leading import and export cities in China. Since late 2005, with the liberalization of China’s express industry, Qingdao has seen rapid growth in the national and international express business.

Wu Dongming, Managing Director of DHL-Sinotrans, said, “China’s rapid and steady economic development and international trade have triggered tremendous growth in the express and logistics market. Being the first international express company to enter China in 1980, DHL is committed to provide a seamless connection, with our best-in-class network infrastructure, for China’s growing economy and the international marketplace, while maintaining our market leadership in China’s express and logistics industry.”

Currently, DHL-Sinotrans has developed the largest air express services network in China with four international gateways - Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen - as well as eight additional direct flight gateways: Qingdao, Dalian, Chengdu, Wuhan, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Xi’an (outbound only) and Hangzhou.

With the launch of the new flight and gateway and the new 24-hour clearance service provided by Hangzhou Customs, DHL-Sinotrans’ customers in the Yangtze River Delta region and Shandong Province will now enjoy shorter time-to-market due to later pick-up and earlier delivery times for their shipments. The pick-up cutoff time will be five hours later on average, making it the most competitive in Zhejiang.

DHL-Sinotrans established its Hangzhou branch in 1993, and subsequently set up branches in Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Shaoxing, Jiaxing, Jinhua and Huzhou. The company has continuously strived to provide customers with diversified and customized products and services, as well as simplifying clearance procedures, to boost the local economic development.

DHL has successfully implemented its First in China strategy, which comprised a series of initiatives launched in April 2006. These included the building of a new US$24 million flagship DHL-Sinotrans Headquarters for its express operations, and to increase the number of branches from 56 to 72 nationwide. DHL has, in fact, exceeded that target, and currently has 73 branches in China with the opening of the Lhasa branch in late 2006.

In February 2007, DHL announced that it will invest over US$110 million in its China business in the next few years. This continued investment will further strengthen its market-leading position in anticipation of continued strong growth. This investment is in addition to the nearly US$1 billion that DHL has already invested in the Greater China region, which accounts for over half of its investment in Asia Pacific from 2001 to 2006.

The formation of DHL Lemuir Logistics Private Limited was an outcome of Exel joining Deutsche Post World Net’s (DHL’s parent company) global fold in December 2005. Across the world, DHL has been working to bring together DHL's Global Forwarding arm and Exel as an integrated business.
John Allan, global CEO, DHL Logistics said, “Exel joining the Deutsche Post World Net family in 2005 cemented our position as the world’s leading logistics group. Addressing the distinguished guests at the official opening ceremony, Mr. Price said the opening of the new DHL Express Country Office underlines DHL’s commitment to Sri Lanka and reinforces its market leadership position.

“My visit to Colombo today and the inauguration of this purpose-built Office and Service Center underscores DHL’s sincere and unwavering commitment to its expanding clientele in Sri Lanka, which is an important market for us,” Mr. Price said. “We are undoubtedly ahead of the competition in terms of capabilities and market share, through our skilful combination of global expertise, local knowledge and the deployment of latest innovations, all of which are being channelled to continuously improve our customers’ efficiency.”

Martin Dudek, Country Manager, DHL Express - Sri Lanka said, “With the inauguration of this new state-of-the-art facility in Colombo, DHL enters a vibrant new phase of its operations in Sri Lanka. With this significant investment, DHL aims to capture the continued anticipated growth in Sri Lanka and further strengthen our industry leadership position as our customers’ first choice. During his one-day visit to Colombo, Mr. Price also met with Chairman Mr. Susantha Ratnayake and the rest of the board members of John Keells Holdings, who are the joint venture partners of DHL Keells, and discussed future business opportunities in Sri Lanka.

With the QCC, DHL has also introduced the Quality Shipment Monitoring System (QSMS), which is the latest addition to DHL’s monitoring tools. QSMS allows shipment monitoring to be done real time for the whole process, from pickup until uplift for outbound shipments and after arrival and until final delivery for inbound shipments. This has allowed DHL a more proactive approach in managing possible shipment delays, e.g. caused by flight delays or bad weather, including activating contingency plans and notifying customers.
