Why are you adjusting the fuel surcharge?

DHL is adjusting the fuel surcharge index table to be better aligned with the industry and market practice in Asia Pacific.

The changes in fuel prices have resulted in increased costs for the air express industry globally, necessitating the implementation of fuel surcharge to be levied on shipments. The surcharge will rise, fall or be removed in line with movements in fuel prices.

Details of the fuel surcharge are transparent and updated monthly on DHL's website.

Is this an industry practice? Is this fair to customers?

DHL adopts the industry practice of imposing a fuel surcharge, which is a transparent process, by linking fuel price changes to an index that is available to the public.

DHL said its fuel surcharge process is fair and transparent, and is index-linked. How do you determine/calculate your fuel surcharges?

The fuel surcharge is linked to the monthly average of the daily mid-spot price for a gallon of kerosene type jet fuel (Rotterdam ARA). Monthly fuel prices are published by the US Department of Energy and can be found at the following link:

<A HREF="http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/weekly_petroleum_status_report/current/pdf/table15.pdf" TARGET="_blank" >http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/weekly_petroleum_status_report/current/pdf/table15.pdf
</A>

Details of the fuel surcharge can be accessed on DHL's website under the 'DHL Express Fuel Surcharge Index Table'.

Why are you using the Rotterdam ARA as the index of choice?

DHL utilises the Rotterdam ARA as a significant proportion of overall DHL fuel costs are incurred in Europe, hence an European average for jet fuel index is used. This is in line with the practice adopted by DHL in Europe, where our parent company is based, which also uses the Rotterdam ARA.

This is a commonly-utilized jet fuel index. For example, Lufthansa, one of our commercial airlines partner, charges DHL using the 'Lufthansa Fuel Price Index', of which the Rotterdam ARA is one of the five market spot prices used.

Why are you not using the U.S. Gulf Coast index, as your competitors FedEx and UPS are?

DHL utilises the Rotterdam ARA as a significant proportion of overall DHL fuel costs are incurred in Europe, hence an European average for jet fuel index is used. This is in line with the practice adopted by DHL in Europe, where our parent company is based, which also uses the Rotterdam ARA.

This is a commonly-utilised jet fuel index. For example, Lufthansa, one of our commercial airlines partner, charges DHL using the 'Lufthansa Fuel Price Index', of which the Rotterdam ARA is one of the five market spot prices used.

With the recent DHL price increase in Asia Pacific, are your prices not already aligned upwards with the market/competitors?

The general price increase is separate from the fuel surcharge which is linked directly to the movement of global fuel prices.

DHL recently raised prices because of increasing costs from our extensive operations, and the increased levels of service offerings, such as enhanced shipment security systems, in Asia Pacific. We have also been investing heavily to expand and upgrade our network infrastructure in the region to provide customers with better connectivity and convenience, and we will continue to do so to serve our customers better.

The new prices will help us to continue to strengthen and enhance DHL's product and service offerings, as well as our extensive network in the region, to ensure that customers continue to receive superior value-added services.

Meanwhile, the changes in fuel prices have resulted in increased costs for the air express industry globally, necessitating the implementation of fuel surcharge to be levied on shipments. The surcharge will rise, fall or be removed in line with movements in fuel prices.

Is this fuel surcharge applicable across the board i.e. all countries and customers in Asia Pacific?

Yes, this fuel surcharge is applicable to our customers in all the countries in Asia Pacific.
